Summer Tanager

Summer tanagers are among the most common neo-tropical breeders in Mississippi. Summer tanagers are difficult to find in the Delta, probably because of the lack of suitable habitat. In the loess hills and in the hilly coastal plains of eastern Mississippi, summer tanagers were found in almost every block.

The large number of confirmations is an indication of the excellent work by many birders. This species is hard to spot among the tops of the 60-foot hardwoods, meaning confirmations are somewhat rare. Confirmations are usually the result of seeing young birds. Probable status is easy because tanagers can be placed on territory by call alone or when a pair are seen together.
