Yellow-breasted chat

Much of Mississippi has either been logged in the last 30 years or is in suburan habitat. Add in the overgrowth common through the state and yellow-breasted chats have numerous places to breed in almost every block in the state. The high number of probables is an indication of that since it was not difficult to find either seven singing males in a block or place chats on territory.

Chats are particularly interesting in courtship behavior. They fly up into the sky, singing as they go. Confirming this species is difficult because the nest is well hidden or difficult to access. Fledglings are difficult to find in the dense brush favored by chats.
