Yellow-crowned nightherons are a difficult species to characterize. The number of reports from the Gulf Coast is an indication that this species is breeding along the rivers emptying into the Gulf or in marsh lands along the coast. Reports from the Delta probably indicate breeding colonies in bayous. Reports from the eastern side of the state are more likely to come from rivers.
